Arthur Irving Academy for the Environment
Research Funding

The Arthur Irving Academy for the Environment issued a call for Research Proposals (RPs) in the general area of ‘Community Sustainability and Livelihood’.  This call was designed to support research that would address conceptual and practical approaches to understanding and supporting the progress of communities in moving toward sustainability.  In adjudicating proposals, the committee recognized the many factors that support sustainability including ecosystem integrity and community resiliency.

This Research support from the Academy was intended as ‘seed money’ to attract additional funds from other sources or as supplement to existing and/or applied for funds. It was not intended as the sole support for research.

Twelve research proposals were received.  After much deliberation, the Research Committee selected the following three research proposals to receive the Academy Research Seed Funding:

Project Title: Radon, Radiation, and Remediation - Making Wolfville Radon-Free

Team Lead: Svetlana Barkanova
Team: Zelda Abramson, Leo Elshof, Anna Redden, Edith Callaghan

Project Title: Dealing with Water Scarcity in Margaretsville, NS: Developing a Path for Community Sustainability

Team Lead: Emilie Gould
Team: Andrew Biro, Graham Daborn, Shawn Grindstaff, Shawn Dalton

Project Title:  Environment and Cultural Landscapes: Intersections of Art, Environment and Education
Team Lead: Laurie Dalton
Team: Leo Elshof, Donna Livingston, Robert Perrins, Edith Callaghan

Thank you to those people who submitted and/or supported a proposal and know that it was a very tough decision.  Hopefully, in the future we will be able to provide this funding again.
